Ingredients Needed For Havarti Cheese Dip
One of the things that makes this one of our best appetizer recipes is the simple ingredients. Just 4 ingredients makes the most tasty appetizer dip for a keto diet.
Havarti Cheese – it’s a mild, semi-hard cheese that’s smooth and buttery. Even though it’s a softer cheese, this creamy havarti cheese Is also super easy to shred and melt.
Mayonnaise – we love to make our keto dips with regular (full-fat) mayonnaise. It blends the dip recipe ingredients beautifully and has enough fat so keep the dip from separating.
Sour Cream – this adds the tang and makes the dip light and fluffy. We prefer full-fat sour cream but if you’re watching calories, the low fat variety can be substituted.
Red Onion – adds color with a sweet and subtle onion flavor that won’t overpower the mild flavor of the cheese.
Making The Keto Cheese Dip
- Start by grating the cheese. Shred your block of Havarti using the largest size shred of the box grater. A 7- ounce block will net approximately 2 cups of shredded cheese.
- In a medium bowl, stir together 2 cups Havarti cheese,1/2 cup mayonnaise and 1/2 cup sour cream.
- Add 2 tablespoons red onion to the cheese mixture and gently stir with a spoon or rubber spatula to blend. Add some salt and black pepper to your taste.
- Cover the bowl with a piece of plastic wrap or a tight fitting lid and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors blend. Transfer the cheese mixture to a serving bowl. This creamy dip is best served cold or at room temperature.
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

What To Serve With Keto Dips
We love to serve our keto dips with a variety of crunchy snacks and low-carb vegetables so there’s something for everyone. Here’s some of our favorites.
- Sesame Crackers
- Pork Rinds – we especially love barbecue pork rinds with this dip. Yum!
- Bell Peppers
- Low Carb Tortilla Chips
- Broccoli and Cauliflower Florets
- Keto Cheese Crackers
Flavors: Add-ins and Substitutions
- A handful of bacon crumbles is Amazing!
- Bump up the tanginess with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese or small amount of goat cheese.
- Add some real zing with blue cheese crumbles.
- Looking for less of an onion flavor? Stir in only the green part of green onions instead.
- Invade the spice rack and stir in a sprinkle of garlic powder, paprika or turmeric.
- Turn up the heat with a dash of hot sauce, a pinch of cayenne or a few red pepper flakes.

Can I Use Other Types Of Cheese?
Sure you can. We based this Havarti recipe on our favorite Jarlsberg dip from the deli, but many other kinds of cheese are awesome substitutes. Really, any kind of mild hard cheese that shreds easily is a perfect alternative to Havarti. Mild cheddar cheese is an excellent choice if you can’t find Havarti.
We don’t recommend using some types of cheese for this recipe. While they’re totally delish, parmesan, romano and pecorino cheeses are very dry and don’t blend as well with the other dip ingredients. Very soft cheese like a cream cheese, goat cheese or some mozzarellas are delicious but tend to mix into the other ingredients rather than be complimented by them.
- Cheddar Cheese
- Monterey Jack Cheese
- Swiss Cheese
- Colby Cheese
- Gruyere Cheese
- Edam Cheese
